Jerry Buss 1933 - 2013

The original post has been taken down out of respect to the Buss family

R.I.P., Jerry Buss

  1. The Lakers have been great for almost our entire lives, so no whining allowed!

Sorry - Jerry Buss, who used to be a great owner, is not even in the same ballpark as the truly worst sports owners, like Chicago's own "Dollar Bill" Wirtz.

From Wiki: "Under the ownership of Wirtz, the Chicago Blackhawks were named by ESPN in 2004 as the worst franchise in sports. In 2002, ESPN ranked Wirtz as the third greediest owner in all of sports. Wirtz died at Evanston Hospital on September 26, 2007, following a brief battle with cancer. During a tribute and moment of silence for him during the Blackhawks home opener on October 8, 2007, the Chicago crowd displayed their displeasure with Wirtz's operation of the organization by booing the proceedings."

    1. First off, hockey doesn't even count.

Second, Donald Sterling, of the Clippers, was the worst owner in sports, until this year, when suddenly the Clippers became an elite team.

  2. Personally I hate the Lakers so watching them struggle now is just a bit of schadenfreude for me, especially with Dwight Howard being a shadow of himself. And Jerry Buss is being moronic about letting his son run things. And hiring D'Antoni? Ridiculous. Check out this article for some good info. http://www.grantland.com/story/_/id/8872264/lakers

    1. Thanks for the article link, I'll read it as I cry myself to sleep tonite.

So, are you a Heat or a Magic fan? If Magic, I can certainly understand why you would dislike Howard.

  3. Why don't you just say how you really feel?

  4. Know what ticks me? Fans of professional "sports" teams. Go watch some HS basketball where there is some love of the game.

You gripe at the arrogance? That is an industry requirement at all levels.

    1. Yeah, yeah, yeah, high school sports are great, pro sports suck.

  5. you know, you're acting like a spoiled child because his mom refused to cook him something he wanted for dinner.

Your team is not even out of things right now, there is time to turn it around.
When is the last time the Lakers had a LOSING year? (end of year?) When is the last time they had 2 or 3 in a row?
When is the last time they had 21 in a row? (Pirates fans you feel me?)

No one feels sorry for you and in fact, much like I do with the Yanks, I root against the lakers because I'm sick of the same team being so good every year :)

So, I'm glad they suck this year - I'm happy to not have to hear about them all year long for once.

    2. Rob, the thing is that Sports don't get my ire up any more.
I will root for my team(s) until I die but most of the emotional hi's and low's have been gone for a few years.

Some might center around the fact that I really don't get to watch too much and some might center around the fact that I've become more a fan of the sport than just of one team.

That being said - we had a bad year (it was predicted) and I dislike my offensive coordinator (and hope he goes elsewhere) but I'm not calling for the Rooney's heads or Tomlin's because of one season.

      :)
      Go Clippers

    3. OK, two things.

First, the Lakers were built to win this year, not next, or the year after. They went way over the salary cap and made moves to win NOW. They have an aging superstar who is 32 but more like 37 in NBA years, who has this year and maybe next when he he will still be an elite player capable of leading a team to the championship. Then they picked up a 138 year old point guard (Nash)who may be a bit past his experation date. So this is not a team where we can say, "wait til next year."

Second, I did not do this post to garner sympathy, especially from fans of less succesful teams. I know that for every Lakers lover, there's at least 5 Lakers hater.

I did this post to vent--to get this off my chest. And I did.
