Leaving Las Vegas

That's what I'll be doing tomorrow, if all goes as planned, tho so far nothing this trip has gone as planned.  Like I sure didn't plan on being card dead for the entire trip, but that's what happened so far.  I didn't plan on getting sick, either.  Actually not sure if what's going on in my throat is a cold or just an extreme case of "Vegas throat" but at this point I'm not sure I'm even gonna be playing tonite, my last nite in town.

No time to do a real blog post, I definitely need to keep my day job and get some work done now.  I need to replenish the ol' sockroll, u see.  So this is another filler post.  Despite the runbad, I will have a few stories to write up after I return home.

Now, I'm not quite leaving Las Vegas in as bad of shape as Nicolas Cage did in the movie that I stole this post's title from.  I won't spoil it for you, but it didn't end well for the old Nicster.  Although he did get to bang a hooker played by Elisabeth Shue in it, which is more than I can say.

So I leave you with some pics that celebrate the Vegas movies that Nic Cage has appeared in.  And even a pic from the only movie about Vegas that was allowed to be made that didn't star Nic Cage.  It starred Elvis instead.

Hopefully back soon!

    1. He was made up to look like Sharon Stone. Great make up job, huh? Totally fooled you!

  2. I take it you aren't following through on your threat to never return to vegas, even as a tourist?

Hope your cards and results at the poker tables turn around. It's tough when you play well and still see poor results. Very frustrating.

    1. Dunno. The "hopefully back soon" meant back to blogging for real soon, not back to Vegas.

    2. I see. Well, I hope to see you back to both. Your blogs are great to read, and while poker in CA can be blog worthy, it wouldn't be the same if there were no more Vegas stories.

Have you ever considered playing at an off-strip local's style casino? Maybe a change like that, even if temporary, could help when in the middle of a bad run? Just a thought.

    3. I think that Nick has the right idea, especially if the MGM casinos really are going to charge for parking. Maybe a blog series on locals casinos and poker rooms?

    4. I agree, Nick, I love to blog about Vegas....that's the thing that will probably keep me going back, I wouldn't have the great material Vegas poker rooms provide.

I've played in most of the locals rooms, especially when I was a 2/4 limit player. But honestly, the reason I go to Vegas to play poker is to play in the Strip rooms. I've got locals rooms in L.A., I don't need to cross the state line for that.

I'm trying different rooms on the Strip to change my luck, and haven't run out of rooms to try.

Honestly, Vegas itself has just gone hill. I'm talking Vegas globally. But Vegas poker ain't what it used to be. I probably can't write what I really think is happening to Vegas poker without putting my employment in jeopardy.

But this right now....just epic card dead syndrome.

    5. Which rooms on the Strip did you play in? I played at the MGM once and didn't see you there. But I was probably distracted by the slut parade so maybe that doesn't count.

    6. I played at MGM one nite...St Patty's Day.

      Other rooms I played in:

      Stratosphere (tourn)
      Aria (tourn)
      Venetian
      Planet Hollywood
      Bally's
      Linq
      Caesars
      Mirage

  3. I love Vegas, but only in small doses. I get excited when I'm traveling there, and even more excited when leaving, if you know what I mean.

  4. Being card dead is not a guaranteed loss. I think the key is to becoming super tight. I have been profitable with being patient. I usually react to being card dead by tightening my play rather than relaxing my range. When you start playing marginal hand out of position good things usually don't happen.

    1. Thanks, Darryl. I agree, I am playing tight, that's why I haven't taken a much bigger hit. But I am trying harder to find spots to open the range a bit when I have position and a read on the players. Found a few good spots, just not enough.

    2. Your variance is going to increase when the sample size is small. I have been lucky in this case. I didn't run up against many sets or pocket pairs. I always fold quickly in this case. Try to minimize the risk. This is why I love position. People underrate it. In the low stakes game I tend to believe people until I catch them in a lie...

  5. Hi Rob, long time no write. You had a great retort to TBC's judgment of your character a few days ago too, BTW.

Interesting you're just now leaving Vegas, in a few days I will be spending half a week in Laughlin, mostly playing tourneys. If anything memorable happens I'll try to write you up something for here, but believe me I understand if at this point you'll take up a "believe it when I see it" posture. :-)

Oh, and Hawaiian Gardens is STILL waiting for their new building to get completed. In the meantime they're still in the huts. Will continue to keep you apprised there as well, now they're saying May or June for the new grand opening.

    1. Thanks for the update, Steve, good luck in Laughlin. Run good and win some money.

Hope to meet up with you at the Gardens soon!

  6. I went to Vegas once, and I will never set foot in it again! Something about the place just doesn't sit right with me and me and my dad almost got into a huge bustup with a 'blood' gang member on the strip..for no good reason other than that he wanted to pick a fight!

But, as far as movies go...Casino has got to be the best of the lot, or 21 with Kevin Spacey :)

New to your blog Rob, but I'll be sticking around!

    1. Wow, that's terrible, so sorry.

But if you are self-banned from Vegas but still like the blog, that's pretty cool for me. Welcome.
