Two Vegas Poker Rooms Open, Another Closes

My new column for Ante Up is now online and can be found here.

Should be appearing in poker rooms around the country soon, if not already. I never know.

  1. I am not sure what the allure would be for these casinos to start offering poker. It just seems like a tough market to break into.

    1. I would agree, but more than that, I do wonder what the economics of a small poker room are. I really wonder how any room of say, less than 8 tables, can make sense to a casino. But there are plenty of small rooms around and they seem to be doing "ok."

We'll see. By the time the issue went to press, the Plaza poker room had already "temporarily" closed down but they plan to reopen next month, and one of the former M Resort dealers will actually be managing it.

  2. I'm going to be opening a "small" poker room in my house. I rake one beer every pot!
    Tips appreciated

    1. If the rake is one beer....what would a tip be? A sip of my beer?

  3. The new issue is in the Tunica casinos.

Some casinos like to offer poker just so the say they are "full service." Wives come to play the machines (big money maker) and hubbies play poker (loss leader?).

    1. MOJO, those issues always appear in your neck of the woods first. I guess that's because they're shipped from Florida.

I know that's why the bigger rooms offer poker, but in the case of The Plaza, I don't think that's it. I think they think they can make some money by offering a low-cost (to them) game with the machines.

For the LVH, the original manager they hired lobbied hard to get them to open the room--at least that's what she told me. But there were other issues there and they decided after investing in the poker room, they wanted to go with a different management team.
